Volume containing both printed and holograph versions of a speech entitled "Slavery and the Rebellion" given by Charles Sumner before the New York Men's Republican Union at Cooper Union, November 5, 1864. Also contains a letter from Sumner to Cephas Brainerd, October 29, 1864 (?) and a letter from Brainerd's daughter Eveline to Dr. Lydenberg, giving him the volume, 1940.

Massachusetts lawyer and U.S. Senator, 1851-1874. He was an ardent abolitionist who attacked the south in his "crime against Kansas" speech in 1856.
